• 金融街で過ごすゆったりとしたひととき

  北京には、ホテルのように一時的な滞在ではなく、ゲストハウスのように遠く離れた見知らぬ場所のような感じでもなく、まるで自宅のようにくつろげる、ユニークな宿泊スタイルがあると以前から聞いていました。北京への出張中、金融街近くのホテル「The Apartments on Financial Street Beijing」を予約しました。思いがけず、この賑やかな街で数日間、ゆったりとした時間を過ごすことができました。
  スーツケースを引きずってアパートメントのロビーに入ると、まず目に飛び込んできたのは静寂でした。金融街の高層ビルで働く慌ただしいホワイトカラーたちとは違い、受付の女性は笑顔で「おかえりなさい」と言いながら部屋の鍵を渡してくれました。本当に家に帰ってきたような安心感を覚えました。ドアを開けると、リビング、ベッドルーム、キッチンが完備されていました。床から天井まで続く窓からは、街のスカイラインが一望でき、遠くに見える西長安街の交通の流れが、まるで黄金の川のようにきらめいていた。
  一番驚いたのは、小さなキッチンだった。旅行中、何度もテイクアウトを利用していたが、ついに我慢できなくなり、階下のスーパーでトマトと卵を買って、簡単な家庭料理を作ってみた。フライパンで油がジュージューと音を立てる中、窓の外には無数の家の明かりが灯った。その瞬間、旅の醍醐味は、どれだけ多くの観光名所を訪れるかではなく、異国の地でも美味しい料理を作れることなのだと、ふと気づいた。
  アパートの立地は驚くほど便利だった。金融街ショッピングセンターまでは徒歩数分。階下のカフェからは焼きたてのパンの香りが漂い、通りの向かいの公園では、お年寄りたちが太極拳をしていた。ある晩、私は堀沿いを散歩した。夕日が水面をオレンジレッドに染め、柳の枝がそよ風に優しく揺れ、数人の子供たちが芝生の上でシャボン玉を追いかけていた。私は橋の上にしばらく立ち、こう思った。「金融街はオフィスビルと数字だけの場所ではない。こんなにも穏やかな夕暮れの光景も、この街にはあるのだ」。
  部屋の細部にも触れておきたい点があった。シャワーを浴びた後、柔らかなバスローブに身を包み、ソファに腰掛けて持参した本を読んだ。コーヒーテーブルには緑茶が用意されており、ケトルはいつでもお湯を沸かせる状態だった。時折、窓の外から車のクラクションが鳴ったが、厚いガラス越しに聞こえ、遠くの雑音となっていた。翌朝、チェックアウトを急ぐ必要はなかった。ゆっくりと寝坊し、バルコニーから向かいの屋根越しにゆっくりと昇る朝日を眺め、自分で淹れたコーヒーを味わい、それからゆっくりとクライアントとの待ち合わせ場所へと向かった。
